While pressure mounts from regulators and the general public who want to see the shipping industry cut its GHG emissions, Nova Marine Carriers is one Operator who is stepping up and joining the growing list of signatories to the Sea Cargo Charter.
For the unaware, the Sea Cargo Charter (SCC) is a global initiative to “align chartering activities with responsible environmental behaviour”. Signatories to the charter agree to abide by a set of principles which require them to measure and report the GHG emissions from their chartering activities in an effort to meet the IMO’s 2030 emissions targets.
In signing on to the Charter, Nova Marine joins a “who’s who” of major dry bulk charterers around the world. Other signatories include: Cofco, ADM, Bunge, Louis Dreyfus Company, Cargill— the list goes on. Since taking over in 2012 as CEO Vincenzo Romeo, the son of Nova Marine’s founder Giovanni Romeo, has led the company to new heights: they now operate more than 100 vessels from Supramax to Cement Carriers. Now it seems Nova’s CEO will be leading their company beyond being a leader in bulk chartering and into the future of sustainable shipping.
To meet their reporting requirements, True North Marine is Nova’s preferred partner. As a weather routing agency we collect much of the SCC’s required data in the normal course of our operations. Indeed several of our clients are signatories to the SCC and we are working closely with them to further streamline the data collection process. Beyond simply collecting the data, our team is also able to perform the calculations required by the SCC to convert fuel usage to emissions data. In an uncertain time, the SCC is a beacon of hope for our industry’s future.
True North Marine is proud to partner with organizations who are proactive in assessing and reducing their emissions. If you would like to assess your chartering emissions or discuss weather routing / performance monitoring we would love to hear from you!
